Preparing for online divorce hearings

On Behalf of | Oct 8, 2024 | Divorce

As virtual court hearings have become more common, it’s important for individuals going through divorce to be prepared for online proceedings. While the setting may be different from a traditional courtroom, the expectations remain the same.

Just as you would not want to present yourself as unprofessional, messy, distracted or inappropriate in a work-related online meeting setting, so you should prepare to present yourself in a positive, professional manner if you’re required to participate in an online divorce hearing.

Space and lighting

Even though you won’t be physically in a courtroom, you should create a space at home that conveys professionalism and respect. Choose a quiet, clean and private area where you won’t be interrupted during the hearing. The background should be simple and uncluttered to avoid distractions. Avoid sitting in front of windows, as backlighting can make it hard for others to see you clearly. Make sure the area is free from distractions like pets, children and loud noises that could disrupt the proceedings.

Proper lighting is also important for an online hearing. You’ll want to ensure that your face is clearly visible on camera. Sit in a well-lit room, preferably with natural light or a good lamp in front of you. Avoid sitting in dark spaces, as poor lighting can make it difficult for the judge and other parties to see you.

Technology and image

Before your hearing, test your technology to ensure everything runs smoothly. Make sure your internet connection is stable and that your microphone and camera are working properly. Logging in early to the online platform you’ll be using will allow you to troubleshoot any last-minute issues. If possible, use a laptop or desktop computer instead of a phone to maintain a more stable connection and better camera quality.

Finally, even if you are at home, it’s important to dress as if you are physically in a courtroom. Wearing professional attire, such as business casual clothing, shows respect for the court and the seriousness of the proceedings. Avoid wearing casual clothes like t-shirts, hoodies or pajamas, as this can reflect poorly on your attitude toward the situation.

Making some effort to prepare for an online hearing can help to ensure that you don’t unintentionally undermine the strength of your case based on your surroundings, appearance and/or technological hiccups.
