Why joint custody is beneficial for children

Virginia fathers who are going through the divorce process are often concerned about how the separation will impact their children. Many dads in this situation are faced with the dilemma of giving up sole custody to the mother. Part of the reason why this question often arises is because experts have in times past warned against children, especially young children, spending time at night away from their mothers.

However, newer research shows the many benefits that children experience when divorced parents share 50-50 joint physical custody. This is true even for younger toddlers and infants. The only exception would be when a parent is neglectful or abuses the child.

New research shows that joint parent custody children do better in many aspects of life than those in sole custody situations. These kids often form better relationships with their parents and do better academically. They are less likely to have physical, emotional and mental health problems. Furthermore, they less likely to engage in destructive behavior.

When divorced exes share custody of their children, the relationships that both parents form with the kids will be protected. Since both parents have regular contact with their children, problems like not feeling needed as a parent or having one ex turn the kids from the other are less likely to occur.

Divorcing parents who are concerned about child custody may benefit from speaking with a family law attorney. The attorney could represent a client in court, draw up legal documents and provide advice during the divorce process.
